Wrinkle Relaxers

What exactly are they?

Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, wrinkle relaxers slow that process.

You've probably heard of Botox, the most popular brand of wrinkle relaxers (medically known as neuromodulators). Neuromodulators are most commonly used to prevent or diminish wrinkles in the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

So what exactly are neuromodulators, and what do they do?                              Facial expressions are created through the contraction of facial muscles. The repetition of certain expressions will create wrinkles over time as the overlaying skin repeatedly creases during contraction.

When injected, neuromodulators will cause the target muscle to relax, gradually resulting in a smoother, more youthful appearance to overlaying skin in the area.

Muscle contractions can be conscious or subconscious. Either way, the brain must communicate with our muscles. An electric signal will travel from the brain through nerves toward the muscle it wants to contract. This signal will cause the release of a substance called acetylcholine, which attaches to the muscle causing it to contract. Neuromodulators block acetylcholine to reduce the strength of muscle contraction in that area.

The effect of neuromodulator injections is typically seen 10-14 days after treatment and last approximately three months.

Neuromodulators vs. Fillers. What's the difference?

Neuromodulators are used to soften lines caused by movement such as raising your eyebrows or frowning. Conversely, fillers help to contour and restore volume lost due to aging. Both types of injectables can be used to keep patients looking and feeling their best!

Got Questions?

Below are some frequently asked questions that may help ease your mind.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING AN APPOINTMENT?
When you enter you will be welcomed and guided to a treatment room (after having a consult/consent forms signed before). An IIAM instructor (over 10 years experience) and up to 3 students will join you in your treatment room where the instructor will guide the students through an assessment to understand your concerns and will then map out the area of your face you want to treat to identify asymmetries and indications of use. Students will then take turns injecting under the watchful eye of the instructor to result in optimal outcomes and symmetry.
DO THE INJECTIONS HURT
The needles used to administer neuromodulators are very small. The most you will feel is a tiny prick, but once the product is injected, there is no pain.
CAN I EAT/DRINK/EXERCISE AFTER MY TREATMENT
While eating and drinking after your injections are fine,  we recommend no exercise for 24 hours after your appointment.
IS THERE BRUISING OR SWELLING POST TREATMENT?
Although rare, there may be some slight pinpoint bruising.
HOW LONG DOES AN APPOINTMENT LAST
An appointment typically lasts around 40 mins.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST

Typically, results can last anywhere between 3-4 months, depending on the area in question as well as the patient's metabolism. For instance, a person who works out daily will metabolize neuromodulators faster than someone who doesn’t work out at all.

ARE NEUROMODULATORS SAFE TO INJECT IN MY FACE?
Yes, neuromodulators have been used safely for many years, most commonly injected in the forehead, glabellar (between the eyebrows) and the outer eye area to reduce fine lines.
