What is it?

Cosmetic botulinum toxins prevent and improve fine lines and wrinkles while helping to soften facial expressions that create etched-in lines. Botulinum toxins do not get rid of facial lines that are present at rest. Therapeutic botulinum toxins treat conditions including TMJ, migraines and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

How do they work?

Botulinum toxins "botox" stops the release of a chemical signal in our bodies that tell a muscle to contract. The amount of botulinum toxin used determines the degree of muscle contraction that is stopped. When a muscle is unable to contract, it prevents the skin above that muscle from folding, which creates the fine lines and wrinkles.

  • How long does it take to see the effect of botulinum toxins? Results can be seen after 2 days in some patients, but the majority will see the full effect in approximately 10-14 days.
  • What are the pre- and post-treatment instructions? There are no pre-treatment instructions for botulinum toxins. However, this treatment is not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Post-treatment instructions include moving the muscle injected every 10 minutes for an hour and staying upright for 3 hours after treatment.
  • What brand do you use in your practice? We use Dysport Cosmetic at IIAM for our cosmetic botulinum toxin treatments and Botox Therapeutic for the therapeutic treatments.

What is it?

As we age, our skin loses elasticity and volume due to decades of exposure to UV rays, pollution, stress and genetics. Most fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring compound found in the human body. This hyaluronic acid goes through a chemical process called "cross-linking" to make it a thicker gel-like substance which is then injected under the skin.

How do they work?

Once injected, hyaluronic acid fillers deliver nutrients, hydrate and plump the skin by holding in water, act as a cushioning agent, and replenish the skin’s natural production of hyaluronic acid, which diminishes as you age.

  • How long does it take to see the effect of dermal fillers? Results can be seen immediately after treatment. However, often there is swelling associated so final results will be seen after 10-14 days.
  • What are the pre- and post-treatment instructions? Before your treatment, avoid vaccines, and blood thinners such as Aspirin, NSAIDS, Ibuprofen and herbals (Vitamin E, flax oil, fish oil, etc.) for at least two weeks. Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment. After your appointment, avoid touching the area and avoid streunous activity for at least 24 hours.
  • What brand do you use in your practice? We use the entire Restlyane line at IIAM.

Platelet-Rich Plasma

  • Treatment Frequency: 1-4 Months

What is it?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are gaining popularity for a variety of conditions, from skin rejuvenation to hair loss. The treatment (also known as the "vampire facial") uses a patient’s own blood cells to accelerate healing in a specific area.

How do they work?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that harnesses and amplifies the "special ingredients" (such as natural growth factors or platelets) found in our blood cells to help heal and restore the hair and skin.

  • Who should not get PRP? People who are pregnant, have cancer, or have blood clotting disorders are not good candidates for PRP.
  • What are the pre- and post-treatment instructions? Before your treatment, avoid blood thinners such as Aspirin, NSAIDS, Ibuprofen and herbals (Vitamin E, flax oil, fish oil, etc.) for at least one week. After your treatment, avoid strenuous exercise, and heat (hot showers, saunas, hot tubs) for 24 hours.
  • How many treatments are needed? The number of treatments needed depends on the patient and the condition being treated.
