Get Glowing

Skin texture and tone - what you need to know

Improve facial complexion, texture and lost volume

Skin is the largest organ of the body which functions to protect us from various external factors. To ensure it stays healthy and glowing, our skin needs to be nourished through aesthetic treatments and proper skincare.

As we age, the fat, muscles, bone, and skin in our face lose volume which can lead to a more gaunt appearance.

At IIAM, our skin health treatments offer a way to regain the dewy complexion you just can't seem to get using at-home skincare products alone.

There are several treatments that promote skin rejuvenation to help maintain or regain a glowy, youthful appearance. Platelet-Rich Plasma (or PRP) and Sculptra are two treatments offered at IIAM.

Whether it's treating texture and sun damage, reducing pore size, diminishing scarring, clearing acne, boosting volume, or stimulating hair regrowth, consult with one of our aesthetic practitioners to discover which treatment is right for you.

What is PRP

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a popular cosmetic treatment that uses your own blood plasma to stimulate cell growth and tissue repair. This treatment boosts new collagen and elastin production in the body.  A sample of the patient's blood is drawn and processed to separate the plasma from the other parts of the blood. Once separated, the plasma is reinjected into areas of concern in the face.

What is Sculptra

Injectable poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) is commercially known as Sculptra. Approved by the FDA in 2009, Sculptra is made up of microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), carboxymethylcellulose, and non-pyrogenic mannitol. This powder is dissolved in sterile water and injected into the lower face to boost collagen. Unlike PRP, when Sculptra is administered, it works with the body's natural proteins to gradually restore facial volume and provide support under existing wrinkles and folds.

The difference between them

While indications for using PRP and Sculptra may be similar, they tend to work differently.

Since PRP uses your own blood plasma, it is the most natural treatment for promoting better skin texture, fighting sun damage, stimulating hair restoration, and diminishing scarring. A series of three PRP treatments are recommended, followed by two maintenance sessions a year.

Sculptra, on the other hand, is a powerful stimulant injected into multiple layers of the skin to combat volume loss, promote and boost long-term collagen production, and assist with maintaining skin elasticity. The result is a gradual and subtle effect that lasts several years.

Got Questions?

Below are some frequently asked questions that may help ease your mind.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING AN APPOINTMENT?
When you enter, you will be welcomed and guided to a treatment room (after having a consult/consent forms signed before). An IIAM instructor with over 10 years of experience and up to 3 students will join you in your treatment room. The instructor will guide the students through an assessment to understand your concerns and will identify any asymmetries to ensure your results are balanced. Students will inject under the watchful eye of the instructor to result in optimal outcomes and symmetry.
DO THE INJECTIONS HURT

There is some discomfort when administering these treatments under the skin. Some describe it as mild pressure around the treated area. A topical numbing may be used to ease discomfort and ice may be applied post treatment to reduce soreness and swelling.

CAN I EAT/DRINK/EXERCISE AFTER MY TREATMENT
While eating and drinking after your injections are fine,  we recommend no exercise for 24 hours after your appointment.
IS THERE BRUISING OR SWELLING POST TREATMENT?

Mild swelling and bruising are common and you may notice that the area of injection is tender to the touch for a couple of days after your treatment.

HOW LONG DOES AN APPOINTMENT LAST
An appointment typically lasts about an hour.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST

Typically after a series of three treatments, PRP results can last anywhere between 6-8 months, while Sculptra lasts 1-2 years depending on the patient's metabolism.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE THE RESULTS

As both PRP and Sculptra are treatments that promote natural changes in the skin, results are often seen 3-6 weeks post-treatment depending on the skin's natural cell cycle.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCULPTRA AND DERMAL FILLERS
Sculptra works by stimulating the skin’s own natural collagen production, in contrast to dermal fillers, which are gel-like substances that sit beneath the skin.
CAN FILLERS STILL BE USED IF I RECEIVE SCULPTRA TREATMENT?
Dermal fillers and Sculptra can be used simultaneously. The optimal treatment plan should be determined by a physician.
ARE THESE TREATMENTS SAFE TO INJECT INTO MY FACE?
Yes, PRP and Sculptra have been used safely for many years and have a long safety profile based on the many years and thousands of times these products have been injected into the skin.
